System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 - Recovery Type and Process - Part 3

Hello Everyone,

In this post, I will explain about DPM Recovery Type and Process.

In Earlier posts, I have explained about DPM installation, agent installation, back-up types and back-up process.

Now, Let's start with DPM Recovery type and process...

DPM Recovery Type:

When You take backup of any computer, database, system drive or any file, then a recovery point for the same is created in DPM. You can see recovery point in Recovery Tab. Recovery point is created with date and time so You can choose to backup either incremental backup or full backup in every scheduled time. 

If You have scheduled backup as incremental backup then last changes applied will be backed-up to DPM (only one recovery point with last backup date is created) which thereby reduce utilization of Disk or tape space.

But If You choose full backup then every-time DPM take backup, it will create full backup with all dates and time (recovery point is created for all dates when full backup is created) which thereby utilise more disk or tape space. Using this backup, You can recover your data to particular date from which You want to revert the changes.

Below are the recovery type:

• Recover to original instance: Using this recovery type, Your original file will be deleted and backed-up file will be copied. 

          Using this backup, keep in mind below points:

1. When You recover any Virtual Machine then VM and its disk will be deleted. Disk from recovery point will be copied to its original location, once copied then VM will be created with same name in hyper-v but it will be in OFF state. You have to manually start the VM.
2. When You recover Guest clustered VMs then You must note 2 things that take backup of clustered VMs at same time and recover them one by one but start them as same time. Most important thing is first remove Quorum Disk from VMs before start because this will fail to start if you don't remove it.
3. After starting, just shut-down VMs again, add same Quorum Disk and start the VMs. Open disk management and online quorum disk, It will be automatically configured in Guest Cluster.

• Recover as a Virtual Machine to any Host: This type helps You to recover backup of Virtual Machine as VM on any other host then its original location.
• Copy to a network location: Using this, You can copy the files to any network location.
• Copy to tape: This type is used for Disk to Disk to Tape method. Using this, You can copy the files to tape from Disk thereby creating double protection layer for the data.

DPM Recovery Process:

Open DPM console, Click Recovery Tab, Expand recovery point of backed-up data, Click on All Protected HyperV Data. You will see backup file in Recoverable Item box in bottom. Select Date and Right click on recoverable item, Click show all recovery points:

Select recovery point which You want to recover and click Recover:

Click Next:

Select recovery type and click next:

Click Next:

Click Recover:

Click close:

This is all process for recovery in DPM... :)
