Microsoft Windows Azure Pack (PRIVATE CLOUD - WAP) - INTRODUCTION - Part 1

Hello Everyone,

In this post, I will share introduction about Microsoft Private Cloud - Windows Azure Pack (WAP).

This post will help You understand the concept & uses of Microsoft Private Cloud (WAP).

WAP is integrated with Windows Server & System Center components which provides cost-effective, Self- service portal & other cloud services which You configure in Your environment.

This uses multiple sites which performs background activities for services which You configured.

Below are the key features of WAP:

  • ADMIN PORTAL: This portal provides full control to Administrator to manage cloud resources, users accounts, quotas, prices & other tenant offerings.

  • TENANT PORTAL: This is End User or Tenants self-service portal which helps customers to manage, monitor or provision their services on private cloud. This portal is also known as Multi-tenant portal where as same time multiple tenants can login & provision Virtual machines on cloud in bulk. I had tested provisioning up-to 50+ VMs at same time using Tenant Portal with 1 Template - Configuration includes 1 GB Ram, 2 CPU & 50 GB Disk. Total average time taken to provision 50+ VMs at same time was 15 mins which is the best time performance than other cloud service providers.

  • SERVICE MANAGEMENT API: WAP Provide API which can be customised to create custom Admin/Tenant Portals & any self service billing portal. You can complete change the front-end looks for the portal as per Your wishes.

  • WEB SITE AS A SERVER: WAP helps Tenant to host Web Sites in shared environment which provide high scalability, security & high-density. Multiple platforms are supported like ASP.NET, PHP, NODE.JS.

  • SERVICE BUS CLOUD SERVICE: Service Bus includes components that provides the messaging capabilities of Azure Service Bus on Windows Server which help You in building, testing & run loosely-coupled, message driven applications in self-managed environment. This service helps in providing similar capabilities on both MS Azure & Windows Server & to enable flexibility in developing & deploying web applications. • SQL & MYSQL SERVICES: WAP Also provides SQL & MYSQL Services which helps tenant to create their databases in SQL Instances or tenant can use them for Web Site Services as well.

  • AUTOMATION: This feature helps in integrating WAP with other frameworks like Service Reporting which is part of System Center 2012 R2 Suite. This integration helps in providing usage report to both Administrator & Tenant for all cloud VMs.

  • INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT: WAP support multiple international languages which includes English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese (Both simplified & traditional), Brazilian Portuguese, Korean & Russian.

DEPLOYMENT TYPES:

WAP includes mainly 2 deployment types:

  • Express Deployment: Used for POC (Proof of Concept) Environment.

  • Distributed Deployment: Used for Production Environment.

Will discuss on this in more detailed explanation with architecture diagram in next posts.

This is the basic introduction about WAP. In my next posts,

I will explain about WAP Components, Prerequisites, Different Deployment Architecture Scenarios with Diagram & Installation/Configuration/Integration of WAP with Other System Center Components.
