Hyper-V - Features - Part 1

Hello Everyone,

In this post, I will explain about Hyper-V, it's features & overview in details.

What is Hyper-V?

Hyper-V is windows server role which enables virtual server creation on windows server using virtual resources like vRAM, vCPU & VHD (Virtual Hard Disk). These resources are taken from physical server resources and used as virtual resources in Virtual Machines.

Using Hyper-V, You can run multiple virtual servers of different Operating system in an isolated form. This gives better efficiency for physical server resources.

How virtualisation will help in better efficiency of physical resources?

Let's discuss with an example...

Consider a Physical Server with below Resources:

  • 32 GB RAM.
  • 2 CPU with 12 Cores each - 24 total cores.
  • 1 TB Disk
Just assume the cost of this server is INR 5 L...

Now, I need to run an web application which will only utilise a physical resource:

  • 4 GB RAM
  • 4 Cores
  • 100 GB Disk

So for this configuration, I am investing an amount of INR 5L and my free resources are going useless. Now consider if I need to Run multiple different applications which need to be installed on different multiple servers then calculate the cost of servers & amount of useless resources which will be going as waste.

To avoid such big loss in terms of business revenue & physical resources, Virtualisation technology is built which is know as Hyper-V. This is an role within the Operating System itself. This helps in creating multiple virtual servers on single server using physical resources thereby giving better efficiency and other benefits.

I tried to explain in very simple language with 1 example above...

There are many other benefits of Hyper-V Server so let's start knowing it's features.... :)
